The Saturna Island Volunteer Fire Dept. was founded to meet the needs of the Saturna community. About the Voluneer Fire Department: The Fire Dept. has two divisions, the Saturna Island Fire Protection Society and the Saturna Volunteer Fire Fighters Association. The Saturna Island Fire Protection Society
provides fire protection and emergency response services to the Saturna Island district. The society is responsible for the collection of tax funds, allocating those funds (for training volunteers, purchasing new equipment, supplies, etc.) and to set service policy, plans, budgets and to report to the community on operations and spending. The Saturna Volunteer Fire Fighters Association recruits, trains and deploys volunteer fire fighters to meet the service requirements in the area. They also advise the Saturna Island Fire Protection Society on priority of funding, policies and strategic operational requirements. About the Volunteer Fire Fighters: The Fire Fighters Association meets on the first and third Tuesdays of each month at the Fire Hall #1. On the last Saturday of every month there is an equipment check. With the exception of the new recruits, all members have had "live fire" training and all officers have completed second level training courses. The funds raised by the Fire Protection Society and the Fire Fighters Association help members to upgrade their drivers licences and pay for training. The Fire Dept. issues Fire Permits through the general store. Community Involvement: The Fire Dept. hosts, and is involved with, various community events and fire prevention outreach programs.
