Open House - New Fitness/Wellness Initiative

Date:

Thursday, May 4, 2017 - 1:15pm

Event Location:

Rec Centre
The Saturna Community Club, in collaboration with the Saturna Recreation Centre, has received a Community Wellness Grant from Vancouver Island Health. This grant provides sufficient funds to bring a fitness instructor to Saturna every Thursday to help us get fitter, stronger, and more mobile. We have found an instructor from Sidney to fill this role; Melody Burgoyne is well qualified to get us started; she has worked for 15 years with older adults promoting improved fitness. She’s also a trained FallProof Balance and Mobility instructor. The grant also provides funding so that two Saturna residents - Chaya Katrensky and Jenn Nilsen can study to be fitness instructors. Upon completion of their training in the fall, they will assume responsibility for these classes. The Saturna Recreation Centre has waived membership fees for the pilot project, thus opening the classes to everyone. And the drop in fee of $4.00 is being reduced to $2 thanks to a generous subsidy from the Saturna Parks and Recreation Commission.
