A documentary film and talk about the Vaka people of Taumako, Solomon Islands by Mimi George, Anthropologist.
The film, We the Voyagers, recalls how Vaka ancestors made the greatest of human migrations, but modern technology isolated them, and made their lives unsustainable. The Vaka Taumako Project was started in 1996 to train a new generation to build their traditional voyaging canoes (vaka), and navigate to distant islands using only ancient designs, materials, methods and tools. Mimi George, anthropologist and sailor specializing in voyaging cultures and her colleague Heu’ionalani Wyeth, will present the film and answer your questions. Learn more at www.vaka.org.
