Saturna Better at Home

Better at Home is a United Way program that helps seniors continue living independently in their own homes by providing simple non-medical services.

What services does Better at Home provide?

Services are added as needs are discovered.  At the present we offer:

• Friendly visiting

• Phone check-ins daily or as required

• Transportation to appointments or social events on island or off

• Light yard work, gardening

• Minor home repairs

• Light housekeeping , limited heavy cleaning

• Errands, eg grocery shopping, mail pick up, recycling

Who is eligible to use Better at Home services?

Anyone living on Saturna who is age 65 or older. There is some flexibility for younger people to be included if circumstances require it.

Who delivers the services?

In each community, local non-profit organizations are responsible for  Better at Home services. On Saturna, the Saturna Community Club is our sponsor and carries overall responsibility for the program.  We are part of Southern Gulf Islands Better at Home which includes Galiano and Pender Islands.

Services are delivered by a combination of volunteers and paid part time casual employees. All employees are provided with Work Safe insurance while working for BaH. Volunteers and employees are required to have a criminal record check.

Who pays for Better at Home?

The Government of BC has given United Way of the Lower Mainland funding to manage Better at Home across BC. Saturna Better at Home accepts donations, such as  a Lion’s Club donation to support  transportation.  Seniors who receive Better at Home services also pay a fee for some services, based on their income. Some services are free.
